Set Fast ForWord school defaults

About school default settings

As a district manager or school manager, you can manage the default Fast ForWord assignment settings at the school level. That way, when you enroll students and create assignments at your school, they’ll automatically use the preferred settings.

To learn about creating assignments see Fast ForWord assignments.

Best practice: Set the default school settings before enrolling any students at your school. That way, all students at the school will automatically use the preferred setting upon enrollment. If you’ve already enrolled some students, you can still change the option for those students at the student level. See the rest of this topic for steps.

Set Auto Assign for a school

Fast ForWord Auto Assign assesses students and automatically assigns the appropriate Fast ForWord component. To learn more see About Auto Assign & FAQs.

By default, mySciLEARN enables Fast ForWord Auto Assign for all new students as they are enrolled in your school. As a district manager or school manager, you can change the default setting at the school level so that all new students enrolled at your school use the preferred setting.

This change does not impact currently enrolled students. To manage those students see Set Auto Assign for your students.

  1. In the mySciLEARN Manage section, click the Schools tab to access the Schools page. If you cannot see the Schools tab, you do not have permission to access this page. Contact your district manager for more information.
  2. If needed, click the school name in the Schools List to open the school profile.
  3. Under School Settings, click the Change Settings button.
  4. Under Assignment Method in the Fast ForWord section, select a new default option.
    • Auto Assign – Have RPI assess the students and create assignments
    • Manual Assign – Let staff create their own assignments
  5. If you're unable to access the Auto Assign option, RPI may have been disabled for your school. You must have RPI on at the school level to access Auto Assign at the school level. See Set RPI school defaults for steps, then return to this task. You'll want to do this if many or most of your students will be using Fast ForWord Auto Assign.

If only a few students at the school will be using Fast ForWord Auto Assign, you can leave this option set to Manual Assign, and use Auto Assign at the student level instead. See Set Auto Assign for your students.

  6. Click Save. The change will be applied to all new students enrolled at the school. Note that currently enrolled students will not be affected. To change the setting for existing students see Set Auto Assign for your students.

Set protocol defaults for a school

A Fast ForWord component’s protocol determines which exercises are worked on in that component, how often those exercises are worked on, and the length of time spent working in each exercise on a given day. These protocols have been proven to help maximize the benefits of the Fast ForWord product. To learn more see Fast ForWord protocols.

By default, all new Fast ForWord assignments at the school use the 5-day/30-minute protocol. As a district manager or school manager, you can change the default protocol for one or more Fast ForWord components at the school level so that all new assignments created at your school use the preferred protocol settings.

This does not affect existing assignments. To manage those assignments see Change the Fast ForWord protocol for a group.

  1. In mySciLEARN Manage section, click the Schools tab to access the Schools page. If you cannot see the Schools tab, you do not have permission to access this page. Contact your district manager for more information.
  2. If needed, click the school name in the schools list to open the school profile.
  3. Under School Settings, click the Change Settings button.
  4. Under Default Weekly Protocol and Introduction Language, select a new default protocol for the components.
  5. First choose the number of day per week (3 days or 5 days), then choose the number of minutes per day (30, 40, 50, or 90 minutes). To learn more see Fast ForWord protocols.

  6. Click Save. The next time a student is assigned to that component, the new default protocol will be used. Note that existing assignments will not be affected. To change the protocol settings for existing assignments see Change the Fast ForWord protocol for a group.

Set introduction language defaults for a school

Each of the Fast ForWord component exercises begin with an introduction that explains how to work on that exercise.

By default, the audio for the instructions is presented in English. As a district manager or school manager, you can change the default introduction language for one or more Fast ForWord components at the school level so that all new assignments at your school use the preferred language. At this time, the following languages are supported:

  • English
  • Spanish

This does not affect existing assignments. To manage those assignments see Edit Fast ForWord assignments.

  4. Under Default Weekly Protocol and Introduction Language, select a new introduction language for the components and click Save.
  5. The next time a student is assigned to that component, the new default introduction language will be used. Note that existing assignments will not be affected. To change the language setting for existing assignments see Edit Fast ForWord assignments.
